Can your period help get rid of a yeast infection?
StarDust Asked: Can your period help get rid of a yeast infection?
I had a yeast infection a few days before my period started. I took some over the counter medicine for a few days, and the symptoms stopped. Could my period have helped clear out the excess yeast?
Answers:
yes it can
Maybe but I doubt it. I had a yeast infection once and took some over the counter meds for the one day relief, then I got my period and the yeast infection came back worse. If you are taking the over the counter meds, I suggest the seven day monistat with the relief cream. Works like a charm.
Vaginal discharge is totally normal – you do get it every day.
You get discharge all the time because this is how your vagina stays clean and healthy – it is slightly acidic to kill off harmful bacteria, flushes out dead cells, and keeps vaginal walls moist to protect them from infection or damage. It's like your eyes, mouth and nose – these, like your vagina, are made up of mucosa which is like skin but without the top protective layer, fluids like discharge, saliva, snot and tears all act in place of that top protective layer…only vaginal discharge is cleaner than snot or saliva, thanks to discharge your vagina is cleaner than your mouth!
It does change – throughout your menstrual cycle it will change slightly, normally just before your period you'll be a little dry, then it will start to get more creamy and just before ovulation it will get stretchy and slimy like egg-whites – this is fertile quality cervical mucus, you get this before ovulation as this is what keeps the sperm alive in the vagina so it can reach the egg.
Smell changes too – it should always smell clean but musky, it will change slightly during your menstrual cycle, but it should never smell bad – if it smells bad then it may be a sign of needing a shower or if it continues for a few days it may be a sign of infection. Guys can smell this before sex, but it's not a bad thing, the smell of your vagina will be arousing to anyone you have sex with – as long as you're clean and healthy the smell shouldn't be strong or bad at all.
You also get more discharge when aroused – this is lubrication, your body makes this so that if you have sex the penis can go into your vagina without pain or damage to your vaginal tissues that could risk infection or put you at higher risk of STD's. In your teens you may get this more – like how boys get erections sometimes when they don't mean to, girls can get a little wetter without arousal.
If yours is super-stretchy it may be that you're close to ovulation right now, lubrication when aroused can be quite stretchy too but not as much as fertile quality cervical mucus.
The only time you should be concerned – if it's unusual.
It's good to know what is normal for you at any given time in your cycle, if you notice any of the following it may be a sign of infections such as yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis – a lot of discharge, watery discharge, clumpy cottage-cheese like discharge, green or grey discharge, smelly discharge (fishy, yeasty or like ammonia) or if it makes you itchy.
You tell if you have a yeast infection by the symptoms you mention; yeast smell, cottage-cheese like discharge, burning/itching – sometimes symptoms are mild so you can't always tell for sure if you have a mild yeast infection, if unsure see your doctor for tests.
